For parents who have been paying attention to the explosive popularity of online teen hangout MySpace.com, make sure you have logged into YouTube.com as well.

The new website YouTube.com is a teen sensation, attracting millions of young people who want to view short video clips and post their own. YouTube encourages members to "Broadcast Yourself" by posting short videos online for the world to see. Videos range from 30 seconds of karaoke to 2 minutes of a scantily clad teenager dancing in her bedroom. Think "America's Home Videos" where everyone has a chance to produce and share their digital creations with a click of the mouse.

For the last few decades kids have had fun making entertaining home videos - that's not new. What is new is high speed Internet access, video cameras embedded in everything from cellphones to digital cameras, and an unsupervised online environment where pushing the envelope is cool. In this digital age, kids can make videos more easily than ever, which opens the door to new forms of "cyberbullying" - posting mean-spirited videos of others online. For kids interested in video, YouTube can be a fun way to share their digital creations with family members and friends. However, parent supervision and involvement is key. Easy access to rude, vulgar and inappropriate videos is too common and lots of young people don't think about the ramifications of posting public videos with self-identifying information or inappropriate content.
